Sonam Kapoor- She’s got the look

Bookmark and Share

Despite a slow beginning, actor Sonam Kapoor is well on her way to becoming a style icon. At the Elle Breast Cancer Awareness do a fortnight ago, actor Sonam Kapoor made an appearance in an abbreviated baby pink Christian Dior gown, looking every bit the prima donna she’s aiming to become. Cut to Kunal Rawal’s show at the Lakme Fashion Week and the bubbly actor turned up in a chic purple houndstooth dress by Marc Jacobs, her hair permed ever so slightly to add a carelessly stylish touch. Ever since her debut last year, the 5’ 9” beauty has featured on almost all the covers of leading fashion magazines, walked the ramp for designers like Tarun Tahiliani and Anamika Khanna (for whom she is now the brand ambassador), and has been impeccably turned out in Lanvin and Stella Mc Cartney for significant social outings.

While industry insiders are betting on Kapoor to be the next trendsetter in Bollywood, those who know the actor well are hardly surprised. Designer Anuradha Vakil, for instance, still cannot get over her first meeting with the actor during the making of Saawariya. “She would listen to me attentively and then ask such technically sound questions about cuts, silhouettes and drapes, that I was quite floored,” says the Ahmedabad-based designer, who had done the costumes for the movie, and has been designing for Kapoor’s personal wardrobe ever since.
Kapoor believes her mother has a lot to do with her sense of style. “When we were kids, mom (Sunita Kapoor) used to be a full-fledged designer, supplying to stores like Glitterati and Ensemble in Mumbai. I would watch models like Nayonika and Aishwarya, before she became Miss World, come in for fittings and discuss outfits and international designers. I saw the kaarigars at their embroidery stations for hours together. I think that’s how my interest in garments grew,” she says from London, where she is currently on a vacation.
